Since the introduction of ChatGPT, phishing attacks have surged by an astonishing 4,151%. And with 89% of companies worried about GenAI’s potential for crafting realistic social engineering attacks, it’s clear that businesses are aware of this.

Because crafting phishing attacks has become much faster, more convincing, and it’s happening on a scale that wasn’t possible for a human to produce. What once required hours of research, manual writing and sometimes even coding, now takes mere minutes.

AI & Biometrics: When “Close Enough” Isn’t Good Enough
Sometimes, a close enough match to the biometric template may be too close.
A core layer of mobile identity, biometric systems usually calculate a similarity between a user’s scan and the stored template. If the score exceeds the defined threshold, access is granted.
Note that these thresholds aren’t fixed. Most organizations tune them depending on the risk assessment and the type of biometric authentication used. It’s important to note here that the higher the threshold is, the higher the user friction.
For example, Amazon Web Services notes that high-security systems often use thresholds of 99 percent and above, while applications focused on convenience may lower them to around 90 percent to reduce friction.
It’s this tuning that makes up the balance between two types of biometric authentication errors: false acceptance (when a fraudster is verified) and false rejection (when a real user is denied).
In NIST’s Face Recognition Vendor Test, algorithms are calibrated to reach specific error rates.
For instance, an average False Match Rate of one in ten thousand, meaning one incorrect acceptance out of every 10 000 attempts. The same reports show that increasing the threshold reduces false acceptances but raises false rejections, denying more real users.
